The Wellkeeper© Cover

Here's an advanced look at what will be the cover for the first issue of "The Wellkeeper". As I tend to, I tried channeling the great Drew Struzan with this layout while also trying to do something unique (at least for ME) with the coloring. As a rule, I usually tend to be very representational as a colorist, where blue is blue and if a character is green, then I color him GREEN, dagnabbit! In this case, I decided to try and be a little bit more abstract and moody, and I hope it work.s

That said, I'm pretty happy with it overall.

Atomic Robo preview

That ATOMIC ROBO fan art I did turned into an opportunity to do the art for a four page back up story for the title. Much to my eternal fanboy glee, the issue featuring that short story is in stores NOW, so run out and buy a copy of ATOMIC ROBO Volume 2, Issue 2 today to see the ENTIRE story that is teased at above. (Once it's been in stores for a month or so, I'll put up the rest of the art.)

INVINCIBLE

Man, I really dig Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker's comic creation, INVINCIBLE! I've wanted to try and draw the guy for fun for a while now, and finally had a fun idea to play with. In the most recent issue, Invincible is sporting a new costume, so I had the goofy idea to draw the NEW Invincible fighting the original suited Invincible. And then THAT gave me the idea of throwing in versions of him from many worlds into the mix, and this drawing is the result.

Blasts from the Past

Here are 4 pages I put together for one of Matt's concepts. They were a lot of fun to work on, and I would have liked to see them finished even though they're on another planet from how I would approach the same script now.

Fixing a page

After receiving some valid criticism of the storytelling flow being off on the seventh page, I decided to draw a NEW first panel that has our skateboarder moving and looking up and directing our eyes toward the second panel rather than directly pointing down towards the FOURTH panel, as it was originally drawn..

You can see a camera phone pic of the separate elements AND the final composited page side-by-side with the original page. I still like that first panel, but the new page reads MUCH better and is far more dynamic. Thanks to JOHN AMOR for the suggestion.

The WELLKEEPER©

These are the first 7 pages I've prepared for a presentation of a new comic I'm developing called "THE WELLKEEPER©".

It's the story of a young girl who inherits a powerful connection to the life force of the earth itself that makes her the latest in a long line of women known as Wellkeepers. As you can see, this "Gift" is giving our heroine no end of drama as she's on the run from mysterious forces trying to wrest that power from her.

The technique I used to do these pages was inspired my Matt's working method of printing out pencils in non-repro blue onto 11"x17" board to ink. But in my case, I "Penciled" the pages digitally in photoshop where I could manipulate the panels and proportions to where I wanted them before moving on to ink it traditionally.

For the love of Kong

I REALLY like King Kong... 'Nuff said.
